Three Hypnotic Power Inductions You Should Know

Hypnotic Power Inductions

In this blog you are going to learn 3 super secret ninja techniques from our ancient ancestors.

We’re kidding! We aren’t ninja’s. Even though we have our blackbelts in British Jiu Jitsu, saying we are ninjas ultimately lowers our standard of prestige. Haha!

Okay, okay - what’s with the whole ninja bit?

Ninjas are known for being able to knock people out with lightning fast speed while using as little energy as possible.

Power inductions are exactly like that. They are super quick ways of putting a person into a deep trance using almost no effort.

In fact, one of Mike’s personal principles is simplicity + efficiency = elegance. Meaning, true mastery is when you can do something without wasted effort, and still get the results you want.

That’s pretty darn awesome, isn’t it?

In this blog post, you’re going to learn:

  • What Power Inductions are
  • What makes them work
  • Our 3 favorite Power Inductions

Also if you stick around all the way to the end of the blog post, we are going to make you an incredible offer that will make you feel like a ninja!

What Exactly Is A Power Induction?

If you’ve never experienced hypnosis or are just starting to learn about it, then this lesson is going to blow your mind.

Most people who are unfamiliar with how hypnosis works are usually introduced to it through stage shows or on television.

In these cases, there is usually a hypnotist on a stage with a group of people and he’s making them do some hilarious stuff, like barking like dogs or sweating profusely as though they were in a hot desert.

While it may seem like the hypnotist has some type of mystical power over the people onstage, the truth is, he really doesn’t.

Wait, wait, wait! Before you start feeling like we just ruined the magic, let us explain one of the core principles of hypnosis.

Context is EVERYTHING.

Hypnosis only works because the person being hypnotized is actively participating in the experience.

There is this common misconception that the hypnotist is using some kind of voodoo magic, and overpowering the mind of his helpless victim. That couldn’t be farther from the truth.

In the context of stage hypnosis, the audience members on the stage know exactly what they are getting themselves into. In other words, they want it to happen so they allow it to happen. That’s why they volunteer in the first place.

In a sense, all hypnosis is self-hypnosis. The hypnotist is merely providing directions to the person getting hypnotized and training them to go into trance.

To make it easier to understand, imagine the hypnotist is like the GPS in your car and the participant is the person driving.

The GPS isn’t controlling the car, and the driver can choose to stop listening to the GPS directions at any time. But if he wants to get to where he’s going, the easiest thing to do is follow directions.

By using specific language and following to some easy to understand principles, the hypnotist can simply and naturally guide the subject to go into a hypnotic trance, by just following the steps that are given to him.

One of those steps is called the induction. This is the part of the process that actively helps the person being hypnotized to go from a normal wide-awake state to a hypnotic one.

There are a lot of different methods for performing an induction, but each of them has the same end result.

Some of the different methods of inducing trance include:

  • Progressive muscle relaxation inductions
  • Rapid inductions
  • Instant inductions
  • Confusion techniques
  • Conversational hypnosis

Power inductions fall under the categories of rapid inductions and instant inductions because these are two of the fastest ways to get somebody into trance.

The best part is they are simple and efficient. This is why in the Mike Mandel Hypnosis Academy we focus on teaching you rapid and instant inductions the most. They are ridiculously easy and work almost every single time.

So, How Do Power Inductions Work?

We wish we could give you this information, but our ancient ancestors forbid us from teaching these deep dark hypnotic ninja secrets.

Kidding again!

You’re going to really be disappointed to learn that rapid and instant inductions sound cool, but they are just plain old neuroscience and biology.

Give Me A Break

Ugh! Right? You thought you were about to learn some awesome ninjitsu stuff and instead we threw science at you!

If that doesn’t make you feel more comfortable about learning hypnosis then we don’t know what will. Everything we teach has sound science behind why it works. It’s the real deal and that makes hypnosis that much more powerful, doesn’t it?

When it comes to rapid and instant inductions, there are two very specific principles that we teach which make the inductions work.

Let’s distinguish between the two and what makes them work.

Rapid Inductions

You could argue that rapid and instant sound pretty similar but it’s more about the execution behind why they work. It’s also about the timeframes.

Rapid inductions can put somebody into a deep trance anywhere between 1 - 3 minutes depending on the type of induction and the skill of the hypnotist.

In most cases, rapid inductions will utilize a principle called catalepsy. Here's a Youtube video we made explaining it

Catalepsy is the waxy immobility of a limb, like an arm or leg, or perhaps the eyelids. It’s a hypnotic phenomenon where a person’s eyes will stay closed even if they try to open them, or their arm will seemingly float in midair all on it’s own.

Some other hypnosis schools will use a cataleptic limb as a measure of “how deep” somebody is in trance. We believe that type of thinking is unnecessary, because we teach all of our students to put people into deep deep trances. There’s no need for a scale of depth when the aim is to always get the subject as deep as possible.

So how does catalepsy work in producing rapid inductions?

In his book, Hypnosis & Suggestibility: An Experimental Approach 1933, Clark Hull wrote:

Anything that assumes trance, causes trance.

This single statement changed the way modern day hypnosis is performed because it gave hypnotists a much easier and faster way of getting the subject into a super-deep trance state.

In simple terms, this means that if a hypnotic phenomenon (like catalepsy) happens while a person is in trance, then you should be able to cause the cataleptic limb to happen first, and hypnosis would follow automatically.

Clark Hull was right! By creating hypnotic phenomena, hypnosis happens quite quickly. You could say, it happens rather rapidly…

Get it?! Because they are called rapid inductions... okay, whatever. You get it.

Rapid inductions are used mostly in a therapeutic setting, where the client is able to be seated comfortably and with limited distractions. Often there is a combination of confusion that is created along with hypnotic language and the use of the cataleptic limb, which really gets the subject into a deep trance, fast!

We’ll discuss a few of our favorite rapid inductions here in a moment, but first let’s talk about instant inductions and what sets them apart from rapid ones.

Instant Inductions

When you are in a situation where you want to get your subject into a deep trance even faster than just a few minutes, then you’ll want to use an instant induction.

Instant in this case, literally means just that. When used properly, these types of inductions can take a subject from a wide awake state to a deep state of hypnosis in just a few seconds.

If our eternal ninjutsu masters wanted to hide any type of super secret regarding hypnosis, instant inductions would be the absolute hidden technique.

Ultimate Secret Technique

Unfortunately though for our friends of the mystical martial arts, science and technology have caught up with us, and provided the exact reason why instant inductions work so well and so fast.

Have you ever been in a situation where you were watching a scary movie and something onscreen happened, and scared the absolute daylights out of you?

Most people would call this a “jump-scare” and it’s pretty common in horror films. When this occurs, you activate what is called the startle reflex which fires off something called a PGO spike inside of your brain. PGO stands for pons (P), geniculate body (G), and occiput (O), which are different physical parts of your brain.

Anytime something is startling, surprising, or there is novelty to it, your brain will fire off a surge of electrochemical energy through the pons, geniculate body, and occiput. This temporarily shuts off the executive function of your brain and you go into survival mode.

In 1976, the Laboratories of Anatomy, Institute of Neurological Sciences, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia concluded that:

“(PGO) spikes, the high voltage waves recorded in the pons, lateral geniculate body, and occipital cortex at the transition from synchronized sleep to paradoxical sleep and during paradoxical sleep...PGO spikes can be produced by external startling stimuli during synchronized and paradoxical sleep...PGO spike merely represents a neural response to some internal 'startling' stimulus during normal sleep, a sign of activation of the same neural network involved in the startle reflex. ”

That’s quite a mouthful, isn’t it? We’re going to make it a bit easier to understand.

PGO spikes are naturally occurring during REM sleep and when you become startled your brain lights up in such a way that your critical faculty goes offline for just a brief moment, causing direct suggestions to pass right into the unconscious mind.

So by creating a sudden shock or startle, and saying the direct command of “Sleep!” the brain will look for some type of resolution, and follow the direction without question.

You thought you were going to learn some awesome inductions and we slapped you in the face with a college level anatomy lesson!

Hashtag Facepalm

Did we scare you?

Ultimately, instant inductions work by intentionally creating a PGO spike and giving a direct command which the subject follows automatically…

...So by now you’re asking “What are the inductions?”

Our Three Favorite Rapid & Instant Inductions

In just a moment you are going to learn 3 awesome inductions which will allow you to get your subject from “awake” all the way into a deep state of hypnosis.

The inductions include:

  • The Dave Elman Induction
  • The Breathing With The Hand Induction
  • The REM Induction

So without further adieu, let’s dive in.

The Dave Elman Induction - Rapid

Arguably one of the most famous inductions ever is The Elman induction, which is named after Dave Elman, its creator.

The purpose of the Elman induction is to successfully take a subject from wide-awake all the way through the steps required to get them into a deep state of hypnosis, also known as the somnambulism; the working state of hypnosis.

By following the exact steps without deviation, you will easily be able to get somebody into a deep state of trance in as little as 4 minutes.

The best part of the induction is that it has a ton of principles built into it that we teach in the Mike Mandel Hypnosis Academy, including yes sets, compliance sets, and fractionation.

We’ve broken down all of the steps into a really easy to understand pattern which goes something like this:

  1.  Yes Sets
  2. Eyelid Catalepsy
  3. Fractionation
  4. Hand Drop
  5. Number Block

Once your subject has reached the point of being unable to recall numbers, you’ve successfully got them into a somnambulistic state.

The Breathing With The Hand Induction - Rapid

One of Mike’s favorite inductions is called the Breathing With The Hand Induction that he learned from his amazing mentor, the late Derek Balmer. This induction contains a number of amazing principles, which magnify the subjects ability to enter trance really fast.

When you are in a deep trance, breathing shifts happen automatically. Like we mentioned earlier in this blog post, “Anything that assumes trance causes trance.” When you are breathing deeply, you activate the parasympathetic nervous system and stimulate the vagus nerve, which automatically creates a relaxed state.

The Breathing With The Hand Induction uses deep breathing to get the subject into a super deep relaxed state, while the cataleptic limb cascades the relaxation into a full blown trance.

That’s pretty incredible, isn’t it?

Here are the steps for this induction:

  1. Have the subject sit comfortably.
  2. Let him know that in a moment you will lift up his arm and rest his wrist comfortably on your finger.
  3. Direct him to close his eyes and take a deep breath. With each inhalation, you gently lift his arm, and as he exhales, you lower his arm.
  4. After a few deep breaths the automation of your subject's breathing will create a cataleptic limb, and your finger may be removed.

Check out this demo from Mike using the Breathing With The Hand Induction.

REM Induction - Instant

Remember earlier when we mentioned that the PGO spike occurs during REM sleep? This induction uses that knowledge to create an instant induction.

This induction was created by Mike Mandel, and uses rapid eye movement as an inroad to trance by intentionally giving the subject a PGO spike.

For the sake of protecting our intellectual property, we won’t go into too much detail about this induction or how to perform it, but we have included a Youtube video demonstration so you can see it in action.
